Tymora, Lady Luck

Alignment: Chaotic Good
Domains: Chaos, Good, Luck, Protection, Sloth, Travel, Trickery.
Favored Weapon: Shuriken (Sharpened Coins)

Tymora, the friendly, graceful, and kind deity of good fortune, owes her impressive popularity to two factors. Firstly, her dominance over narrow escapes and lucky discoveries makes her the patron of choice to Faerun’s burgeoning adventurer population, who propitiate her in hopes of prolonged survival and spectacular takes. The greatest boon to her church came during the Time of Troubles, however, when Tymora appeared to followers in Arabel and set up shop in the temple known as the Lady’s House. As the entire continent quaked with magic gone wild, Tymora offered all-too-absent stability and the reassurances that some deity still cared about their human subjects. The ability to actually meet a deity (in exchange for a reasonable donation to the church, of course) bolstered faith in desperate times, and the ranks of her clergy and followers swelled accordingly.

Dogma: One should be bold, for to be bold is to live. A brave heart and a willingness to take risks beat out a carefully wrought plan nine times out of ten. Place yourself in the hands of fate and trust to your own luck. Bear and conduct yourselves as your own masters, showing your good or bad fortune as confidence in the Lady. Chase your own unique goals, and the Lady aids the chase. Without direction or goals, you soon know the embrace of Beshaba, for those on no set course are at the mercy of misfortune, which has no mercy at all.

For Deific Obedience

Obedience: Buy a round of drinks, and sing a song in praise of boldness, bravery, and your goddess’s glory. The song must be audible to those nearby. When the song is done, finish your drink while in the company of those which you bought the round. If a creature is attracted by your song, do your best to engage them in conversation about yours or your allies’ exploits and how it demonstrates that fortune favors the bold. Roll a d20 at the completion of your obedience; at any one time during the day, you may substitute this roll for another (your own, or someone else’s). You may elect to use this substitution before or after you know the results of the first die roll.

Boons
1: Lucky Blessing (Sp) divine favor 3/day, blessing of luck and resolve 2/day, or prayer 1/day
2: Contagious Fortune (Su) Your luck is legendary. You not only derive a stronger benefit than others from effects that aid your luck, but it also emanates from you to your allies. Increase luck bonuses you receive from any effect by +1. If you yourself grant an effect with a luck bonus, you instead increase the bonus of the others who receive that effect by +1.  This ability stacks with other effects that increase a luck bonus, but not with other uses of this boon.
3: Fortune’s Favor (Su)
Tymora protects those who leap into the fray without hesitation, and you cloak yourself in her favor when you go boldly forth toward your foes. You do not provoke attacks of opportunity for movement that takes you closer to an enemy you can see.

Champion’s Oath

The Divine Champion, Liberator, or Virtuous Bravo sponsored by Tymora still makes an oath, though it is not as unwavering as those of lawful deities. Tymora is not opposed to trickery for the greater good, and thus these variant paladins are not bound by a code against falshoods or deception. In addition they have the following tenets:

  • Fortune favors the good; I will not hesitate to fight against those who oppress or attack the innocent.
  • Fortune favors the bold; I will never run in cowardice, rather I will press boldly forth where the cause is just.
  • Fortune favors the gracious; I will acknowledge whenever I, or others, have benefitted from a lucky roll of the dice and praise the Lady for it.
  • Fortune favors the cunning; I will play any hand to my advantage over the wrongdoer; dealing a hidden card to tip my hand against evil is a just deed.
  • Fortune favors the generous; I freely serve my community and share my worldly goods with others, so I might demonstrate prosperity through charity.

Clergy & Temples

Clerics of Tymora favor gaiety and spontaneity, believing that those who enjoy the greatest fortune are those who take the greatest risks. They position their temples as refueling stops for adventuring bands, often offering such staples as holy water and healing potions. Some churches take this a step further, offering excessive secret aid to the most daring of adventurers in a public relations effort to “prove” the value of Tymora’s doctrine. Clerics hail the miraculous success of these heroes upon their return from dangerous dungeons and haunted tombs, declaring their survival and plunder the reward of Lady Luck. Halflings consider Tymora to be one of Yondolla’s Children, and consider her widespread worship in human lands as simply the greatest of Lady Luck’s numerous humorous cons.

Each Tymoran temple is an independent operation with its own hierarchy and doctrinal interpretation, which usually boils down to the whims of the high priest or priestess informed by a baseline collection of beliefs and customs. This longstanding tradition has recently encountered a challenge in the form of Daramos Lauthyr, high priest of the Lady’s House of Arabel, who seeks to unite the church under a single pontiff — himself. Thus far, his efforts have proven to have little effect on temples flung further away from Arabel, as most Tymorans value their autonomy higher than anything else.
