Description: Strong, tanned skin, and sturdy, this woman looks like she would have made a stout farmers wife. She has light freckles, large brown eyes, and flaming red hair. Her clothing tends to greens, browns, and blacks, and she can normally be seen with a longbow on her back, and a sword and hammer at her side. Around her neck is a silver chain bearing a medallion depicting a set of balanced scales resting on a warhammer.
Personality
Alanna is quite introverted when not on duty. Awkward, shy, and often anxious, she usually prefers to not burden others with her company, and prefers to listen rather than talk, and rarely raises her voice. Often when she’s bored or not sure what to do, she’ll clean her weapons or try to whitle, or even read a book. When she’s working, she stands up straighter, her voice is firmer, and clear. In combat and when working, she speaks up more, and takes her duties seriously. She cares very much about fairness, even to her enemies.
She knows she doesn’t know everything, but she has a strong moral compass and isn’t afraid to speak up when necessary. She has trouble accepting praise, she always thinks she could have done better. She fidgets and freezes up when cornered and in tight spaces, as it brings back painful memories of her childhood. She fidgets with the silver scales on her medallion when nervous or unsure.
Background
Alanna was born to lower class farmers outside Tilverton in 1360. They were hard workers, and she lived a good, albeit poor, life, there was always food on the table. As a child she witnessed her father being extorted by thieves and brigands, and they never seemed to be able to get ahead. She learned hunting and fishing from her father, and cooking, herbalism, and reading from her mother. She expected that she would grow up, marry a local boy, and be a farmer’s wife like her mother, and her mother before her.
Her life was set on a different path in 1372 when the City of Shade returned to Toril and destroyed Tilverton. Unfortunately, her parents were killed as part of the initial invasion. Thankfully, Alanna was not in the city at the time, and she was picked up by a fleeing merchant, who eventually left her at an orphange in Suzail.
In Suzail, her life became hard. The owners of the orphange, Mr. and Mrs. Birch (for she never knew their full names), were both cheap and cruel. They gave the children just enough to survive, but never enough to be full, and used them as a cheap source of labor, sending them out to the fields outside the city for days at a time, or into the houses of wealthy patrons to clean and perform other servant duties. Alanna initially rebelled against this, she hated the Birches, and wished to return to the woods and fields, and for her rebellion, she was disciplined harshly, sometimes beaten, sometimes locked away and not fed for days. Her spirit was crushed and she became more complacent, more accepting, and was eventually assigned to the kitchens, but never let to leave the orphanage.
In 1376, her time in the orphange came to an end after an investigation by the Church of Tyr found the orphange to be abusive and neglectful, and that Mr. and Mrs. Birch had been hiding most of the gold they made off the children from the tax collectors. While the Birches fled Suzail to parts presently unknown, the boys and girls of the orphange were found new homes, or at least better orphanges to be sent to. Alanna, being a young woman of 16, elected to stay at the Church of Tyr, where she worked hard to learn the law and be trained as a barrister. She practiced and trained with bow, hammer, and sword, her aspiration being to become an advocate for the people who had no one, and an enemy to those who would hurt others.
She left the temple in 1378, and since then has traveled about, chasing bounties and living off the land as best as she can.
