Slaadi
Source: The Creature Chronicle, with foreward adapted from this source and WOTC canon.
Limbo is Chaos. A plane of infinite possibility, it embodies both creation and destruction, a constant spiral of entropy in which unbelievable vistas spring into being and are just as quickly washed away by the tides of probability. Anything can, has, or will happen in this eternal Limbo, and amid the raging chaos the cavorting slaadi sing songs of hedonism and madness. The batrachian slaadi embody this chaos turned inward. They live only for themselves: eating, rutting, exulting in the raw potentiality of Limbo. They are inveterate bullies, not out of malevolence but a simple inability to consider the wants or needs of other beings. A slaad exists for one purpose only: to do what it wants. It epitomizes the dangers unbridled, unfettered chaos brings in its wake.
A common aphorism among conjurers and planar travelers is that a slaad is just as likely to pay you a compliment as it is to eat you. Trying to diplomatically engage a slaad is, in short, a fool’s errand more likely to get the would-be negotiator attacked than anything else. Even demons will make deals, as tenuous as they are, but slaadi make no bargains, accept no bribery, and ignore appeals for mercy. This was because slaads didn’t recognize the traditional rules of diplomacy. They instead follow their own unique and rapidly changing strings of “logic” that only the particularly insightful can follow, indicated by differences in their gestures, body language, and tone, along with changes in the context and relationships between parties that they speak about. Failure to communicate with a slaad could result in a wide range of random reactions and conclusions, such as believing the speaker wasn’t real, believing the opposite of what they were saying is true, running away from them in fear, attacking the speaker with berserker rage or just making loud croaks until the speaker goes away.
Slaad Lords
Just like the archdevils and demon lords, a class of demigods exists above the rank-and-file slaadi. Few of these slaad lords are known to mortals, and only the insane turn to their worship. The slaad lords include:
- Chourst, the Croaking Chaos
- Renbuu, the Changer of Hue
- Ssendam, the Idol of Insanity
- Ygorl, the Angel of Entropy
A second class of cosmic beings, the lesser masters, exist on the same level as the infernal dukes and nascent demon lords. These almost-divine beings are even more obscure than the true masters and include such strange creatures as Bazim-Gorag the Firebringer and Wartle the Juggernaut.
Slaad Subtype
Slaadi are a race of chaotic neutral outsiders that hail from the swirling entropy of Limbo. A slaad possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).
- Darkvision 60 ft.
- Immunity to sonic.
- Resistance to acid 5, cold 5, electricity 5, and fire 5.
- Except where otherwise noted, all slaadi speak Slaad.
- A slaad’s natural weapons, as well as any weapons it wields, are treated as chaotic for the purpose of resolving damage reduction.
- Entropic Aura (Su): The mere presence of a slaad subtly weakens the fabric of reality. Whenever a non-slaad creature adjacent to a slaad rolls a d20, it must roll twice and take the worse of the two rolls.
- Insanity (Ex): All slaadi have chaotic, ever-shifting minds. Any non-chaotic creature that makes mental contact with a slaadi (such as by telepathy, the detect thoughts spell, or the mindlink psionic power) must make a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 slaad’s HD + slaad’s Cha modifier) or be confused for 1d4 rounds.
The subraces of slaadi are:
- Slaad tadpole (CR 2)
- Mud slaad (CR 6)
- Red slaad (CR 7)
- Blue slaad (CR 8)
- Green slaad (CR 9)
- Gray slaad (CR 10)
- Gormeel (CR 10)
- Slaad embryo swarm (CR 12)
- Death slaad (CR 13)
- White slaad (CR 15)
- Golden slaad (CR 19)
- Black slaad (CR 20)
