Espionage Expert — Unchained Ranger Archetype

Design Notes: This is a coversion of the archetype from Owlcat’s Wrath of the Righteous computer RPG, adjusted for PnP and geared to our settings and based on our Unchained Ranger. Features were altered from the original in order to better thematically reflect the archetype.

These rangers’ favorite hunting grounds aren’t woods or mountains, but city streets and in the halls of rival factions. These masterful spies hunt for secrets, rather than meat, and stalk persons rather than game, using lies and stealthiness as effectively as blades and arrows.

Skills: The espionage expert adds Bluff, Disguise, Diplomacy and Disable Device to his class skills, and removes Handle Animal, Knowledge (nature) and Survival. This alters the UnRanger’s class skills.

Urban Tracker (Ex): The espionage expert gains the urban tracking feat, and adds 1/2 his level to Diplomacy checks to gather information when locating individuals using the mechanics of this feat. He also gains skill unlocks for the Diplomacy skill when used to gather information as if he had the signature skill feat. This replaces survivalist.

Spellcasting: The espionage expert’s spellcasting ability is Charisma based, rather than Wisdom based. His spell slots per day are affected by having a high Charisma score, rather than Wisdom. He otherwise memorizes and prepares spells as a normal UnRanger. This alters the UnRanger’s spellcasting.

Trapfinder (Ex): The espionage expert gains the trapfinding feature of the Unchained Rogue, using his ranger level as his rogue level to determine the benefits. This replaces the UnRanger’s 1st-level ranger talent.

Undercover (Ex): At 3rd level, the espionage expert adds 1/2 his level to Bluff and Disguise checks, as well as Stealth checks made while in urban terrain. This and danger sense replace the UnRanger’s favored terrain feature.

Danger Sense (Ex): At 3rd level, the espionage expert gains the danger sense feature of the Unchained Rogue, using his ranger level as his rogue level to determine the benefits.

Expert Strike (Ex): At 20th level, an espionage expert becomes a master hunter of his sworn enemies. He can, as a standard action, make a single attack against a favored enemy at his full attack bonus. If the attack hits, the target takes damage normally and must make a Fortitude save or die. The DC of this save is equal to 10 + 1/2 the espionage expert’s level + the espionage expert’s Charisma modifier. An espionage expert can use this a number of times per day equal to his Charisma bonus, but he cannot attempt this ability against the same creature more than once in a 24-hour period.
